Why introduce a training plan?

A training plan summarizes all the training and development measures that a company has planned for its employees. It provides an overview and helps to think about training strategically rather than selectively.

Developing a training plan helps you ask the right questions: What skills do the teams need today and tomorrow? Which training courses contribute to the company's goals? Which learning formats are useful and practical?

This results in forward-looking planning that takes into account both the needs of employees and the expectations of management, while keeping an eye on costs. Let's take a closer look at the four key advantages of a training plan.

Training plan: involve all employees

In principle, all employees can benefit from training measures, regardless of their role, level of employment, or length of service. Apprentices or employees in training can also be involved in training activities, provided these are appropriate in the context.

The company determines which individuals participate in which measures. At the same time, employees can actively contribute their training wishes and help shape their development.

A structured training plan is therefore suitable for companies of all sizes and in all industries. It creates transparency, promotes fairness, and ensures that training is not left to chance.

Four reasons for a training plan

1. Fulfilling training obligations

Even though a training plan is not required by law in Switzerland, employers are responsible for the training and long-term employability of their employees.

This includes, in particular, training measures:

  • to ensure work ability and adaptation to the workplace,

  • in the area of occupational health and safety,

  • to accompany technical or organizational changes.

Recording these measures in a training plan helps to maintain an overview and systematically fulfill corporate responsibility.

2. Targeted support for corporate goals

The creation of a training plan requires a prior analysis of training needs. This allows necessary measures to be identified at an early stage and planned over a defined period of time.

A structured plan makes it possible to develop a training strategy that is aligned with the company's goals and challenges. It makes sense to define clear criteria or KPIs (key performance indicators) in order to evaluate the benefits of individual training courses. If it becomes apparent that a measure is not achieving the desired effect, for example because the content is not practical or the learning objectives are not being achieved, the learning format, scope, or content can be adjusted.

3. Keep costs under control

An annual training plan creates transparency about planned measures and budgets. This facilitates financial control and prevents unplanned expenses.

A structured plan helps you:

  • realistically estimate the training budget and use it in a targeted manner,

  • rank measures according to impact and priority,

  • consciously consider internal training courses or alternative learning formats.

Practical tip: The following questions can help you assess the importance of a training need:

  • Is the need relevant in the short or long term?

  • Which employees or teams are affected?

  • What impact does training have on goal achievement or performance?

4. Promote and retain employees

Training your employees helps to:

  • maintain their employability in the long term,

  • promote initiative and further development,

  • open up career development prospects.

Training is perceived particularly positively when it is part of an individual development project and takes into account the needs and goals of the employees. This allows you to gain new skills for your company while reducing the risk of losing them in the long term.
